Welcome To Hidden People!
Hæ hæ! My name is Gem King and I am the creator of Hidden People. Originally from England, I fell in love with the nature, culture and rugged beauty of Iceland during my many visits to the country before I finally moved here in 2015.
My visits had led me to meet fascinating people outside the main tourist domain and the creativity amongst these people left me in awe and deeply inspired. It was then that I knew I wanted to join the natives in celebration of the nature and culture by making authentic Icelandic giftware of my own, either from the nature or around the theme of nature. I also wanted to share the space in my store with people that inspire me every day through their creativity.
I named the shop Hidden People partly because of the craftsmen and women all over Iceland that most tourists will never be privileged to meet, who are using nature in a creative way. Several of whom contribute to the final products that I make. However, it was also a tribute to the legendary ´Hidden People´ (Huldufólk) who live in the elf world.
One part of my mission is to celebrate the nature of Iceland whilst still preserving it—in particular, the moss, trees and lava. For this reason, the moss I use is taken from sites where construction work is planned, the wood is from trees already felled and the lava is hand picked from a lava mine. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Iceland for the supportive response that my business has received and also wish all the visitors to Iceland a really happy and fulfilling vacation!
The gifts made by Hidden People are truly unique and most are not available to purchase on any other website or in any store.
I will always have a personal preference for my company to remain small. By this I mean that I personally handle every aspect of production and maintain very personal communication with my customers, in every stage of their purchase or custom request. That said, the company has grown in success over the last 3 years and satisfaction of my customers has put Hidden People in the top 10 places to shop on Trip Advisor!
